Dear Pichler Family and Friends,
I am deeply grateful for your decision to award me the 2024 David J. Pichler Memorial
Scholarship. This generous scholarship will significantly support my academic journey at
Dartmouth, and I am truly honored.
During my time at Stuyvesant High School, I have immersed myself in various activities to explore my passions and develop my skills. As a member of the math team and the Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, I’ve explored problem-solving and intriguing mathematical concepts. Additionally, serving as the chief math editor for the Math Survey magazine has been an incredibly rewarding experience.
Beyond academics, I’ve contributed to the Stuyvesant Spectator as a writer and editor in the science department. Leading the Stuyvesant Linguistics Club has allowed me to investigate language and communication. Moreover, I researched brain inflammation at Mount Sinai’s neurology lab and participated in the Columbia Science Honors Program, where I’ve engaged in rigorous STEM coursework. Volunteering has been a significant part of my life outside of school; whether I’m playing the piano at fundraising concerts, organizing music therapy efforts for dementia patients, or
contributing to Red Cross humanitarian projects, these experiences have shaped my character and values.

As I look ahead to my next four years at Dartmouth College, I am excited by the endless possibilities. Dartmouth’s abundant research resources and tight-knit, undergrad-focused community will undoubtedly nurture my intellectual curiosity. As I hope to explore computational linguistics and delve into neuroscience, I am eager to learn and contribute. Last but not least, as a huge hockey fan, I can’t wait to go skating on Occom Pond!
Thank you once again for your support.
Warm regards,
Shaon Anwar

Stuyvesant '22, Dartmouth '26 (expected)
Daniela was presented with the twelfth annual scholarship on Thursday, June 16, 2022.

My name is Daniela Maksin and I am absolutely thrilled to have received this wonderful opportunity! I was born to two Ukrainian immigrants in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, where I am the eldest daughter of six children. I have always been fascinated by the sciences and have thus used my four years at Stuyvesant to immerse myself in a plethora of STEM opportunities. This has manifested in me taking classes such as Molecular Genetics, AP Chemistry, and AP Psychology, as well as being a member of Stuy's Pre-med society and shadowing a neurosurgeon during my junior year summer.
In terms of mathematics, around which the Pichler Scholarship centers, I was first a member of Stuy's selective Math Team in my freshman year. Since then, I have retained a very close relationship with that class's teacher Mr. Peng and I've continued to push myself in classes up to AP BC Calculus. Even beyond my STEM passions, I've fostered a plethora of leadership skills through my extracurricular pursuits, which have included being one of Stuy's five Big Sib Chairs, serving as the Student Union's Director of Communications, organizing Model United Nations conferences as the club's Director-General, and being the Business Manager of the Stuyvesant Spectator. I am currently set to major in neuroscience at Dartmouth, where I would love to begin my pre-med track, though I am still entirely willing to explore other career possibilities.
Above all, I am looking forward to taking advantage of Dartmouth's stunning location and renowned research opportunities to grow as a learner and as an individual. [June 2022]

Carter Ley
Stuyvesant '21, Dartmouth '25 (expected)
Carter was presented with the eleventh annual scholarship on Thursday, June 17, 2021. The scholarship was presented via teleconference due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
I am honored to receive this scholarship in memory of David Pichler. I feel lucky to have attended Stuyvesant and even luckier to attend Dartmouth this fall. I will look back on my four years at Stuyvesant with gratitude and fond memories of difficult classes, outstanding teachers, engaging extracurriculars, and great friends. I am pleased to share David’s appreciation for Stuyvesant.
Stuyvesant taught me how to work hard and find motivation in challenge. Math classes were always ‘type-II fun’ for me: arduous ordeals that were gratifying in hindsight. Mrs. Avigdor’s AP Calculus BC was my most difficult math class, but it was also my favorite—despite being completely remote. I also enjoyed Stuyvesant’s writing and history classes; my favorites being Mr. Hanna’s AP European History and Dr. Greenwald’s AP US History.
I involved myself with Speech & Debate at Stuyvesant. The activity taught me how to research and speak with confidence, but I also learned what it meant to be a member of a large organization. Serving as Team Manager during my junior year and President during my senior year endowed me with an appreciation for the importance of organization and communication.
I have been a rock climber for most of my life, and it is my greatest nonacademic passion. In 2019, I completed a four-day ascent of Yosemite’s 3000-foot El Capitan after months of training. At the end of my sophomore year, I brought the activity to Stuyvesant by cofounding the Stuyvesant Climbing Club with a mission to introduce students to climbing in a safe and supportive environment through indoor instruction and outdoor practice. Over the past two years, but especially during the pandemic, we’ve hosted meetings at local boulders and climbing gyms in New York City. I’ve also led several trips to the Gunks, a 250-foot cliff in upstate New York. Climbing has been a significant part of my life, and it is rewarding to share this experience with other students. I look forward to continuing my climbing at Dartmouth.
Dartmouth was my first-choice school, and I applied under the Early Decision deadline. Hanover’s proximity to world class rock climbing was an appeal for me, but I’m even more excited by the intensity of Dartmouth’s outdoor culture and history. I am also excited to attend an institution that is not only academically rigorous, but also intellectually flexible. I anticipate studying Economics and Geography at Dartmouth, but I am confident my plans will change. I see Dartmouth as the perfect place to explore my academic interests. After Dartmouth, I look forward to pursuing a career in finance.
This summer I am looking forward to several climbing trips to New Hampshire, Colorado, and Wyoming. I am also excited to work as a climbing instructor for younger children. I can’t wait to get to Hanover this fall and begin my first quarter at Dartmouth.I am thankful for the opportunity provided by this scholarship, but, above all, I am honored to receive it in David Pichler’s memory. Eve Wening Hausman
Stuyvesant '20, Dartmouth '24
Eve was presented with the tenth annual scholarship on Wednesday, June 10, 2020. The scholarship was presented via teleconference due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thank you all for this incredibly generous scholarship. I am so touched by how many individuals have donated to David J Pichler’s memorial fund, and it is an honor to accept this in his name.
The past few months of social isolation have made me feel detached from the Stuyvesant community I’m leaving behind as well as the new community I am entering this fall at Dartmouth. Receiving this award has reminded me of the wonderful people and opportunities I have and will encounter at both schools.
Stuyvesant has been a challenge, but I am so grateful to have been exposed to an amazing sweep of classes and brilliant people. My favorite classes have included AP US History with Dr. Greenwald, AP Calculus with Mr. Wille, regents/AP physics with Mr. Strasser and Mr.Avallone, and Great Films with Prof. Montserrat. Every semester my favorite subject changes, and Dartmouth’s commitment to academic freedom was one of the things that initially attracted me to the school. I hope to continue studying languages in college and go abroad when I can, something this scholarship will greatly facilitate.
Since school ended in March, I’ve been working for my primary care doctor, and being so close to the work she does has made me more confident that I will go into medicine.Combining this focus with my love of languages, global studies and adventure has me thinking about programs like Doctors Without Borders. Though I’m tentative to declare my future at 17, I know I will continue exploring science, math and international studies at Dartmouth.
At Stuyvesant I’ve played on three varsity sports teams: soccer, basketball and softball. Not only has this been ridiculously fun, but I’ve experienced an incredible emotional education on these teams. My teammates and coaches have shown me how to navigate Stuyvesant and always see myself as an aspect of a greater whole.
Though this past year I focused on sports, from Freshman to Junior year I was active in Student Government. Besides writing thousands of emails, I learned how to campaign (way harder and more exciting than I expected) and build efficient teams to lead JPROM cruises, school policy, movie nights and fundraisers.
But this is all just resume info! I’m also really into biking around NYC, listening to/making music, and playing with my epic cat, Stinky Altitude. I’m excited to meet you all and hear about your time at Dartmouth.
Thank you so much for this scholarship. It is an absolute honor and will allow me greater freedom and possibility in my explorations at Dartmouth. I am so thankful to you. [June 2020]

Jerry Sun
Stuyvesant '19, Wharton '23 (expected)
Jerry was presented with the ninth annual scholarship on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.
First of all, thank you so much for making Wharton less of a financial burden on my family.
Just to tell you a little bit about myself, I'll be attending The Wharton School next fall, likely majoring in either management or economics. Throughout high school, my academic interests have ranged from mathematics (Calculus) to computer science (Computer Graphics) to biology.
Outside of school, I've developed a strong interest in business and entrepreneurship. I co-founded e-commerce startup Candlelix with my mentor from Germany in junior year, while also interning at various companies for work experience. I'm also really interested in the mathematical and analytical side of business; one of my dream jobs is to become a financial analyst. On the side, I dance and act in Stuy's annual shows and love going karaoke with friends. [June 2019]

Irene Lam
Stuyvesant '18 Dartmouth '22
Irene was presented with the eighth annual scholarship on Wednesday, June 6, 2018.
I am extremely honored to receive the David J. Pichler Memorial Scholarship. Attending Dartmouth, with its many facets of learning and community, has been my dream, and this scholarship is the start to that journey.
As a current Stuyvesant senior, I have taken various courses across STEM and the humanities. While I'm still searching for my niche, I have found a passion in law. Last summer, I worked at the New York County Supreme Court as a judicial intern for Justice Saliann Scarpulla. This past summer, I was a UCC intern at Skadden Arps. Now, I work part-time as a Legal Assistant at David M. Peterson P.C., working with negligence (personal injury) and post-9/11 compensation (Zadroga) cases.
At Stuy, I’ve been an editor at the Writing Center since junior year. In regards to extracurriculars, I am predominantly involved with the Alumni Mentoring Program, ARISTA, Taekwondo, and Stuy Prep. Outside of academic studies, you can find me playing the Chinese zither (guzheng) or practicing martial arts.
At Dartmouth, I plan to pursue either an Economics or Government major. I'm anticipating the DOC trips, and am eager for the many LLC communities (crossing my fingers for my acceptance!). However, regardless of how much my plans derail, or where my future takes me, I am confident that Dartmouth's stellar professors and undergraduate advising will maximize my potential.
Above all, I am enticed to learn at Dartmouth, bound not by the community of their Dartmouth Outing Club or my aspirations to pursue law, but by how great the sum of our parts could be. [June 2018]

Tobias Lange
Stuyvesant '17 Dartmouth '21
Tobias was presented with the seventh annual scholarship on Wednesday, June 7, 2017.
I am honored to have received the David J. Pichler Memorial Scholarship and thrilled to be attending Dartmouth this fall. Coming into Stuyvesant, I often heard the phrase “you can only get two of three things: sleep, a social life, and good grades.” Over my four years, I learned how wrong that mantra was.
At Stuyvesant I’ve taken a rigorous course load and enjoyed classes ranging from Human Diseases to European Literature to AP Macroeconomics, but my favorite subject throughout high school has been math. I was lucky enough to be placed into the Honors track my freshman year, and have been in this track all four years of high school. My Precalculus teacher and my AP Calculus BC teacher are the last two coaches of the NYC Math Team, and they changed the way I think about math. Before I always approached a problem with only one goal in mind: getting the answer. They taught me that the solution, the process of getting the answer, was more important. They also taught me to prove theorems that I use and to not take anything for granted.
Not only have I enjoyed the academic aspect of High School, I have also enjoyed myself greatly in my extracurriculars. I’ve been on the Varsity Baseball team since freshman year, I was named a captain this past year and our team finished with the best record and highest seed in decades. I also played Basketball for four years, one on JV and three on Varsity. I was captain of Basketball as well and helped lead our team to the playoffs for the first time in my career. I’m not just an athlete though, I also play Baritone Saxophone in the Jazz Band, participate in Red Cross, a community service club, and was a mentor through the Big Sib Program.
My career aspirations lie in the quantitative side of economics and business. I plan on pursuing an Economics major modified with Math and a minor in Public Policy. I believe that since a lot of economics is theoretical, having a quantitative background will better help me get into the practical aspects of economics through actual data. Studying Public Policy is a way to ensure that economic policies are actually passed and therefore cause a tangible difference on society.
Dartmouth stood out to me during my college search because of its dedication to undergraduate teaching, it’s natural beauty, and the ability for me to modify my major. I was thrilled when I found that I had been accepted, and my accepted students weekend at Dartmouth was incredible.
Again, thank you so much for this great honor. [June 2017]

Lylia Eng
Stuyvesant '16, Dartmouth '20
Lylia was presented with the sixth annual scholarship on Wednesday, June 8, 2016.
I grew up in the Lower East Side (L.E.S.). I live with my parents and three younger siblings: two younger sisters and one younger brother, sixteen, twelve, and seven respectively. One of my younger sister attends Stuyvesant as well and is currently in her sophomore year. I am also bilingual; my parents immigrated to the United States right before my mother gave birth to me, so I grew up listening to their native language,Cantonese, a Chinese dialect. I can also write in Chinese as well, though my writing skills are now a bit rusty. It has been a while since I have written in Chinese.
In school, I was involved with the school newspaper. I was on the editorial board for The Spectator in the layout department. I also participated in cross country and track & field. My events were long distance running and racewalking. Outside of school, I interned at a laboratory and conducted a research project, as I enjoy the math and the sciences. I also greatly enjoying working with people. In my spare time, I volunteered or worked in daycare centers in addition to Chinese Staff & Workers’ Association (CSWA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting for workers’ rights and currently antiÂ-displacement in the L.E.S. I hope this gives some better insight as to why I am and what I do in my free time. I cannot wait to meet you all. Thank you! [June 2016]

Isaac Gluck
Stuyvesant '15, Dartmouth '19
Isaac was presented with the fifth annual scholarship on Wednesday, June 10, 2015.
It is a great honor to have been chosen in David's name to win this scholarship and I'm so excited to be attending Dartmouth College next year.
At Stuyvesant I take a breadth of courses and participate in many extra-curriculars. My favorite classes have been in the STEM departments, especially computer science and biology. I am considering majoring in computer science, research biology, or perhaps even going pre med. I also hope to get involved with the DALI research lab at Dartmouth.
My non-academic interests include theater and sports. I was captain of the Stuyvesant varsity soccer team, executive producer of SING! for three years, and acted in many plays. I also am a member of the Student Union Cabinet, Big Sibs, and the Symphonic Orchestra. I was born and raised in New York City, on the Upper West Side. Outside of school I play the violin and the guitar, captain a club soccer team, and enjoy hiking and the outdoors. I hope to continue all of these in some form at Dartmouth.
Thank you again for such an amazing opportunity. I was excited to meet you and hear more about David at the awards ceremony. I am very appreciative that you created this scholarship in his name. [June 2015]

Jennifer Zhao
Stuyvesant '14, Dartmouth '18
The fourth annual scholarship was presented to Jennifer Zhao on Wednesday, June 11, 2014.
I am honored to win the award and it means a lot to me. I would like to tell a little bit about myself...I have grown up in New York City my entire life, and I am excited to attend Dartmouth in the upcoming fall. I am interested in studying biochemistry and getting involved in a STEM program. I am undecided on whether I would like to go down a medical path or engineering one, but I am hoping that in the future I will gain a lot of experience in working in research. Of course, that is all subject to change. I am an open person and I am willing to commit myself to anything that I find interest in. During my years at Stuyvesant, I have worked hard for a wide variety of courses. My strengths lie in mathematics and in the sciences, but I still enjoy participating in the humanities. Outside of the classroom, I have spent my time running on Stuyvesant's cross-country team, working as an editor for the yearbook, stepping, and volunteering as a member of the National Honor Society. [June 2014]

Hayden Karp-Hecker
Stuyvesant '13, Dartmouth '17
Hayden was presented with the third annual scholarship on Wednesday, June 5, 2013.
I was so excited and honored when I found out I was the recipient of the David J. Pichler Memorial Scholarship last spring. Learning about all the people Mr. Pichler touched and the things he accomplished during his lifetime only made me further appreciate the honor. I am even more appreciative now that I am here at Dartmouth: I have already used some of the scholarship to purchase a laptop and textbooks, and I plan to use some more of the scholarship to study abroad in the near future. I have been here in Hanover for under a month but I have already fallen in love with Dartmouth. My extracurricular activities this term include being on the Advertising Staff on The Dartmouth newspaper, and DIPP, and investment club.
I am taking Econ 10 (a statistics course), Intro to Psychology, and Gov 5 (International Relations). Before coming to Dartmouth I had never been part of a newspaper, played a role in investing real money, or taken any courses in the fields of statistics, psychology, or international relations. I’ve been here for three weeks and these are only a handful of the things I’ve experienced for the first time; I cannot wait to see what the next four years bring! [October 2013]

I think it goes without saying that my time [at Dartmouth] has been great so far. Meeting nice people, joining interesting activities, taking fascinating classes - every aspect of Dartmouth has been as good as I could have hoped for. Yes, I did go on a DOC trip (Hiking 1), and it was one of the most memorable experiences I've yet had in my life, although I must admit I'm not exactly eager for another 5 days outdoors without toilets or showers any time soon.
Currently I'm taking Japanese 1, Economics 10 (the statistics of economics/pre-econometrics), and Biology 11 (DNA to Disease). Each of these classes has been manageable after what I have been through at Stuyvesant (the stress levels of which I imagine you might have heard about). I am planning on going on the LSA+ to Tokyo this summer as part of my experience learning Japanese. At this point, I am not planning to take a pure math course this year (I guess Economic Statistics kind of counts, but... not really), but I will in the future, most likely in linear algebra or math theory, or maybe some computer science.
As for extracurricular activities, Mock Trial, Quiz Bowl, and The D (newspaper) are my three major commitments. I am planning to travel to Boston early November to participate in a Mock Trial competition as an expert witness. I have already participated in a Quiz Bowl Tournament in which my team placed third (we proudly defeated MIT in a very close game and might have placed first but for a technicality). I'm on the Tech team for The D and am helping to redesign the website which will hopefully be online by the end of the term.
I'm also in a whole slew of Asian organizations. I am a part of: Dartmouth Asian Organization, Global China Connection, Dartmouth China Care, and Dartmouth Japanese Society. I am the Pan Asian Council Representative for the last club (DJS). For these clubs, we usually just hang out every week and discuss issues about Asia and occasionally hold fundraisers.
I hope that gives you a glimpse of what I've been up to at the college so far. As you can tell, I'm having a great time here and would like to thank you, your friends, and the Pichler family for this great opportunity. Oh, and one last note, my nickname is "Tangent." Yes, spelled the same way as the math term. Believe me, introducing myself as "sine over cosine" has worked wonders in helping people remember my name these past few weeks. It's worked so well that I'm often greeted by people who know my name but whose names I shamefully do not remember. Anyway, thanks once again, and please relay this message to the others! [October 2012]

Sarah Cho
Stuyvesant '11, Dartmouth '15
Jay H. Park Jr., Stuyvesant ’94 and Dartmouth ’98, presented the first award to Sarah Cho on June 8, 2011. Sarah was very appreciative to be selected and asked that the following message be passed on to all of the donors:
I was very grateful and honored to receive the David J. Pichler Memorial Scholarship. After learning for what reason, or more specifically, for whom this award was being presented, my feelings intensified. It motivated and inspired me that a man could inspire such strong sentiments in the people he encountered in his life; that I would be attending the same schools he did and, in a sense, following in his footsteps. It alleviated some of the nervousness that I felt about my future and gave me more confidence about what I will achieve at Dartmouth. I hope to become a person who can inspire similar sentiments in the people I encounter – at Dartmouth College, and anywhere else I go. [July 2011]
